St. Anger – Metallica – Chorus - Drum Beat

Print This Drum Beat

"St. Anger" is the title track from Metallica's eighth studio album, released in 2003. It won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in the following year.

This beat is first heard in the chorus, around 0:50. The most distinctive aspect of the beat is how Lars delays the back-beats to the ‘ands of 2 & 4’. During recording, Lars forgot to turn on the snare, but when listening to the playback, liked the sound. However, the low-fi sound was generally derided by fans and critics alike.

The excellent film “Some Kind of Monster” documents the writing process and band-therapy sessions that took place during the recording of the St. Anger album. It gives a humbling insight into the very human people behind the band’s tough exterior.
