New Sounds

By Nate Brown

In this off-beat lesson, we're taking a step back to create some new sounds on the snare. This is a fun pattern to practice, but most importantly, it may inspire some new ideas in you.

Stepping outside of the usual center-of-the-head strokes or rim shots can be fun. Although not always applicable to rock and pop songs, creative techniques are fun to play and make interesting solo ideas. Jazz and fusion artists often incorporate these more non-traditional types of ideas into their playing. You can see Keith Carlock using this technique at 1:48 in this drum solo video. If you've come up with any creative ideas for unique sounds, please share them with us below.
