Buddy Rich often used crossover patterns like this to spice up the visual aspect of his performances. That’s really the purpose of playing a crossover pattern like this — it looks cool.
I find that thinking about the pattern for what it is rather than how it reads (in this situation, at least) is a better approach to learning it. It really is a simple concept.
For fun, you can layout 3 books or pillows on the table or floor. Use them as your temporary drum kit to play this pattern. It’s a lot of fun!
