In my previous installment, I talked about my experience of joining John Riley at his PASIC 2011 clinic. John used the Sonny Rollins tune Tenor Madness to give the standing-room only audience a lesson on improvisation.

Here's a link to the song yet again.

John had me take a couple passes at improvising over the song (while humming the melody in my head), playing time while comping with my left hand only and then adding my bass drum as another comping voice. http://onlinedrummer...at-2011-pasic/.

John then instructed me to try it again, improvised comping, but this time staying within the following formula: 2 notes with the left hand, 1 note with the bass drum. I hung in there and did a fairly good job, but who knows what I actually played. If I had it to over, I would ideally play something like this.

At the end of the clinc, John played improvised his own solo over Tenor Madness. Here is footage of that solo captured by Bart Elliott of Drummer Cafe.

Here is my transcription (and video performance) of the jazz legend, Philly Joe Jones, playing the opening head of Tenor Madness.

Coincidentally, I just ran across a video done by Peter Erskine that broaches a similar topic.
