Hello everyone,

I am 58 years old and just starting playing drums a few months ago. I love it!

I have never been good at playing other instruments -- piano is hard for me because I have small hands, and I sucked at guitar because I have long fingernails. Once I found the drums, I found my passion!

My drum instructor is an ordained Episcopal priest who was once a professional rock drummer -- and she totally rocks it.

I am a retired IT management executive and live in western Oregon. I have been married for 33 years and in my spare time I work for a veterinarian (I love animals too.)

I have a new drum kit -- a Gretsch Catalina Maple with 3 ride toms, 2 floor toms, and bass drum. I have Zildjian cymbals - 14 inch high hats, 16 crash, 18 ride, and 20 crash. I found a really good deal on everything I purchased, and expect that this drum kit will last me a good long time. I didn't want to purchase a entry-level set and then decide down the road that I needed to upgrade. Although my kit is not top-of-the-line, it is very nice quality and will work for me forever!

I wanted to say thank you to everyone here on OLD -- you have all played a role in helping me to practice and learn new techniques.

A special thank you to Nate -- I watch your videos over and over for practice, and you're so patient with me as I rewind and play your videos over and over and over again! I have learned a lot from you, and look forward to many more lessons!

I agree with you about Nate, he's a very inspiring guy, I too have learned a lot from him.

Edit; I also love animals and have recently started voluntary work in an animal rescue centre near to where I live, dog walking, cleaning out the kennels, that sort of thing. I dont have time for a pet of my own so this is the next best thing for me.

I started just over 2 years ago at 56.
A lot of men, when they get to our age and stage of life - kids gone, money and time to spare, go and buy a red sports car to try and recapture their youth or look cool!
We just decided to re-live our youth and love of music by buying drums.

Greetings from very sunny South Africa and welcome to the "Drummunity" Pascal here.

That's a very nice kit! One thing you will find about drums though, is that relative to other customizable compared to other instruments i.e. with regards to skins, cymbals, extra toms or bass drums etc. I got a very very entry level century kit to start out with and upgraded skins, cymbals, pedals and recording equipment to around 10x the amount I originally paid for it!

Nate is a great guy on and off the drums and he does a lot of contributing to the topics on the boards, I'm sure you'll be sure to see him around.

If you have any questions for me or the other members, feel free to ask, I'm sure everyone else will agree with me when I say we try to build up a warm tight-knit community from all walks of life, but with one passion at least in common, and we will always do our best to help out!

Thank you everyone for your kind, welcoming words! I am so thrilled to have this wonderful drum support family! I have found such joy in playing drums -- I try to play every day, even if it's only a few minutes.

Someone asked for a photo of my drum kit, and I am happy to show it. It's my baby -- when I bought this kit, I unpacked all of the boxes, and spent an entire day putting the kit together with all of the hardware, drums and cymbals. I was pretty darn proud of myself for figuring it out. Of course, I needed help getting it tuned and set up for me. Now I am much more comfortable playing around with the set up and continue to find ways to make it 'mine'.

I've definitely bonded with my drum set ...

We definitely have such a great group of people here. I think drummer in general have a special bond. We seem more willing to support, teach and help... at least I know it's true around here.
