Hey guys,

I recently purchased a 5 piece "OSC Percussion" 5 piece drum kit for $10 at a garage sale. The kids trashed it and I got a killer deal....I think.

I pulled off all the wrapping on the shells and am planning on giving it a new paint job and some new hardware. I just have a few (a lot) questions on the subject.

1) As this kit was once whole it is already pre-drilled for hardware holes. The old hardware is rusty and not complete. I want to purchase new hardware for each drum but I don't know if the holes are universal for all types or am I going to waste a lot of money on non fitting lugs and such?

2) Painting....!? How should I go about this. I am not much of a painter and have no clue where to start. What kind of paint should I use? Primer? Gloss coat? I am really lost with this one. I could use a lot of help.

3) As far as stands and other things go (not cymbal stands) how should I mount the toms? I do not want them to be bass drum mounted.

4) Anyone know of any good websites or stores that I can go to and purchase all of these things?

I know the shells aren't the best quality ever but I think I will start with the snare and move on if the snare sounds nice.

Sorry for the complete ignorance guys but I really wanna do this right. Pics below are of what I have.

Not sure if the lugs and such are universal or not. I want to say they are, but I'm not 100%.

If you paint, then definitely use a primer. Otherwise you'll be putting what seems like 8 million coats of paint.

Here is a thread of a set I did last summer.

Mounting you could do something similar to the pearl ISS mounts. Those should be universal.

Paint, I used Spray paint.

You will need to get some wood filler to fill in any gouges and where the outer ply is joined. Then you'll want to sand it all smooth. Tape off your bearing edges. I also taped up the holes from the inside and taped the big holes where the heads go so no paint got inside. Then proceed to laying primer. After the primer was dry I laid down the white paint. When that was good and dry I taped for the black stripes. Then after all that was done I hit it with a couple coats of clear coat. Then cleaned and de-rusted the hardware. Then painted the hardware flat black.

I just put a link to your thread, Kevron, on our RSS feed. Great thread!!

And, congrats Nuklear41. I don't know how $10 could be a bad deal. Awesome!

Thanks guys. I'm very excited now. Now I just need to think of a cool color to paint them. I'm thinking red shells with a black stripe in the center. Black hardware. Thoughts?
