I've been struggling to get my head around triplets for ages, I couldn't get the feel of them, but may have finally come up with a solution.

Attached is a PDF I created which may help others too.

Note: Although the PDF says snare drum, I started by tapping on my computer desk.

1) Set your metronome to about 40BPM to begin with (for those without use http://www.metronomeonline.com/)
2) The accented notes will always fall on the beat from the metronome.
3) Start by tapping out the beat with your right hand. (Say 1, 2, 3, 4)
4) Once comfortable tap out the alternative 8th beat using your left hand. (Say 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and)
5) Then move on to the 8th note triplets (Say 1 Trip Let 2 Trip Let 3 Trip Let 4 Trip Let)
6) Then the 16th notes (1 ee an ah 2 ee an ah etc)

Hope this helps others.

Just to add to Dormouse's helpful post on Triplets.......

I found that last year when I was learning Triplets on my drum lessons, that playing along to Dan Brigstock's "A Design for Life" by The Manic Street Preachers, and one of Dan's other transcriptions - "The Captain" by Biffy Clyro really helped me out loads ;)

"A Design for Life" by The Manic Street Preachers transcribed by Dan Brigstock........

The Manic Street Preachers - Design For Life (2).gif

The Manic Street Preachers - Design For Life (3).gif

And the second song also transcribed by Dan Brigstock - "The Captain" by Biffy Clyro (from here on the Onlinedrummer sheet music section)

http://www.onlinedru.../pdf.php?Id=160

These both have excellent "Triplet" grooves to jam along to when learning Triplets.

Once you have gone through the Triplet exercises that Dormouse has posted....Give these a go guys ;D

Hope this helps also ;)

Cheers,

Mark.

For people just getting started w/ triplet feel, I find counting like 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 4 helps getting the initial feel - kinda like vocalizing paradiddle when getting the feel for paradiddles.
