I was wondering whether anyone has ever come across something like this before (sorry about the poor 3D work)

metronome.png

What the image is meant to represent is a metronome, which allows you to select the time signature as well as BPM, but rather than 'beeping' or 'ticking' in time, it flashes an LED (the sphere at the top).

The thought being, like me, other beginners must find it difficult to listen to the click, read the music and make sure that all of your limbs are in the right position at the right time, so by having a flashing LED metrorome (with a screw thread underneath for attachment) you can place it near your music and have a visual representation of the beat.

Stupid idea or a wow moment?

I believe most metronomes have a visual component. What an LED would offer over the usual visual component is a bright flash, which you wouldn't necessarily have to be looking at to see.

Interesting concept. Could be helpful!

Another interesting metronome is the Body Beat metronome. I'm still interested in trying one of these out. I've tried them but not actually sat down and jammed with one...

I think most metronomes have a flashing or visual componenet but I find that it is more difficult to match your playing to this than the sound. It is also more difficult to watch the display and read your music at the same time.
I find that after listening to the beep (sound) for a short time that it becomes natural to your brain and you adjust your playing accordingly.

Looks like I need to invest in a better metronome.

Cheers all.

I have one of these as well and they're pretty good and cheap - about £15 ($22)

And you also have the Pearl Drum Throne Thumper (Butt Kicker), it's a great idea (it kicks you in the butt "in time" to what you're playing  ), but they are expensive @ £260 to £310 :o (again, not sure what that is in US bucks).

As per usual, it's on YouTube ;) :
