Hi I'm not really much of a drummer but need to learn a rhythm for a song that is in the style of that kind of country style "horse riding" rhythm that you find in songs like "Walk the Line" does anyone know if it has a specific name?

Have a look at this:

The main groove starts at 00:15 after the intro. He's using sticks, but you can also use brushes.

(And hello, and welcome !)

lrlR lrlR lrlR lrlR lrlR also works. Then you can throw some doubles on the l's to give some accents and flamboyance.

James Harrison has a series of videos teaching Brushing techniques on Vater's Youtube Page. He does a train beat in one of those vids, but I can't remember which one. It isn't labeled as having a train beat in it. But its in there. There are several of the vides.

To add:

I used to do it the way in the video, but I found after several songs in a row of that it gets very tiring and boring. Its easy to "drift off" mentally while your playing it. So switching to the lrlR made it sound the same to the untrained ear, and was very easy to play for long periods of time. I also didn't drift off mentally.

Train groove is good, and uber-cool (in a corny, country kind of way), but if the accents are proving above you at the moment and you need a quick fix, you should try a country two-beat! It's a very simple pattern, I'll upload a quick transcript in .pdf format.

Play it fast and solid for that real country sound!
