Can anyone help me with the basic beat of this song. Is it a constant 4/4 beat on a tom or are the toms hit in a circular motion with beat 1 on the snare, beat 2 on small tom, 3 on middle tom and 4 on floor tom ? Or is it some other combination?

It's very hard to pick out in the original recording, but one technique I use to be sure is looking up YouTube videos of the song being played live. Often, you can catch a glimpse of the drummer playing the groove.

In this video, I see the drummer playing the floor tom and accenting it on the & of 4...

This video, though a much later video, the drummer also seems to be playing floor tom...

Many drummers change things up a bit when playing live, but something like rotating the toms I think would stay. I'm pretty confident that it's floor tom and an accented & of 4... possibly accented with another tom.

Anyone else pick out anything different?

Thanks Nate, I shall study these and see if I can reproduce the sound.
