I'm deciding between a Gretsch Renown (8x8, 10x8, 12x10, 16x16, 22x18) in Transparent Ebony for $1400 and a Pearl Masters MCX (10x8, 12x10, 16x16, 22x18 w/chad smith signature snare) in black sparkle fade for $1350.

I've had a Pearl Export (11x12, 12x14, 16x16, 20x18) forever but now want to upgrade and have always loved the beefy sound of it. I'm having an incredibly hard time finding a shell pack in my price range with larger mounted toms like this set.

I have a chance at this special pearl mcx in black sparkle fade (which is only available in europe- i'm in the usa).

What do you guys think? I'm in a bind here.

You won\'t go wrong with that MCX Masters kit. It\'s a good sounding kit, and black fade sparkle looks really nice.
If using double bass is cheating, then so is using 2 sticks.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it's really a crazy deal- the MCX comes with a chad smith signature snare, black hardware and evans ec2 heads (though I usually play remo pinstripes).

Such a hard decision, though! Pearl's warranty is lifetime, but I like Gretsch's hardware better. The Gretsh comes with an extra 8in tom that I've always wanted to get but the MCX comes with the chad smith snare drum. The black sparkle fade finish on the Pearl basically doesn't exist in the USA anymore so if I pass on this, there's no chance of me finding it again.

On the other hand- I've been thinking about checking out the MCX with the larger toms- (12x9 and 13x10)...

Check out my youtube drum covers here

Ahh,,,see......they usually take you back to the late 70's or early 80's.

Evans heads take you to far into the future. Aquarians take you right back to where you were when you realized you needed new heads.

I would still go with the masters. That\'s a great deal, plus I went through the same thing as you. I have 5 toms setup on my kit, and an extra 2 sitting around for my BLX. Honestly, I wouldn\'t need the smallest and largest Tom I have. I just like having them, but I use the basic 3 the most.
