In Topic: Herta Drum Fill -’Violence’ Blink 182 – Travis Barker

If replies are disallowed in this particular forum, I'm sorry.

I got inspired after watching Alex's lesson, so I went and had a go at transcribing that intro.

Enjoy those hertas, but don't hurt yourself! ;D

In Topic: counting double drags

15 March 2013 - 04:17 AM

It's a triplet rudiment, so you should be subdividing in threes firstly. Six counts in total, three for right-handed and three for left-handed; you could think of it in 6/8.

Having said that, the Vic Firth website shows two different rhythmic applications of the sticking; one straight and the other a bit "swing" sounding.

http://www.vicfirth....3doubledrag.php

The first rhythm uses a dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern...

The primary strokes (not including the grace notes) of the dotted type are counted:

     1   (2) + 3    4    (5) + 6

Numbers in parentheses should be counted but not played.

...and the second does not.

Primary strokes are just even eighths in 6/8 time:

     1 2 3 4 5 6

Add your double-stroke grace notes and you're done.

Hopefully that's enough info to sort it out for you. Watch the vids of John Wooton playing them to get more of an idea.

In Topic: Let\'s groove with groups now !

Here's the raw version of that track my band recorded. The section pertaining to the post starts at around 1:33.

I'm not happy totally with my contribution. The whole session was just the three of us playing live with no click. It really shows up how much I rush the tempo! Oh well, if nothing else, it's a good lesson.

I pretty much pulled off the solo. The second fill isn't perfectly even, but it's close enough not to be annoying imo.

See what you think!

EDIT: Hmm... the attachment options seem to have disappeared! OK, I'll upload it as soon as I figure it out!

In Topic: Ever learned an ENTIRE album?

10 January 2013 - 02:23 AM

Hi, SBD here again I have learned whole albums. The first would have been Nickelback Dark Horse..but I dont like them so much now and I was 8 and my mum said their songs were not really for 8 yr olds! but the last album I learned all the way thru was wasting light by the foo fighters.
I usually listen to them for a few days, thru headphones and then start to play along, if I cant get it I usually look for tabs or on you tube.
I dont worry too much about getting every note just so anymore, because that is a recording and not everyone plays a song the same evrytime live, if they did wouldnt it be a bit boring?
SBD ^_^ ^_^

Thanks for your post SBD. Nice response! And everyone else too, thanks for your input.

My favourite way of learning is to play other people's stuff. You see lots of things sub-consciously creeping into your playing, and the diversity of your interests moulds your own little drumming "personality".

In Topic: What is your ONE favourite song to drum along too.

My answer to this question changes over time; If I find something new and fun, I'll go with it. AT THE MOMENT it's probably "Give Me One Good Reason" by Blink 182. The song's got some cool fills and features a nice heavily displaced groove during the verses. I'm at the tail end of a Travis Barker phase at the moment, so this choice will no doubt change within the coming months...
