I use an iPhone with FrozenApe's Metronome and with ear buds it works well for me.
I also use a Kindle Fire -- I use it for instruction videos and it works great because of size of screen. Although the iPhone is great for playing along with music, my old eyes do better with the Kindle when it comes to videos.
I'm new enough at this that I don't have any tried and true methods that work best for me. I simply change it up as to whether I'm playing along with music, watching video, or just practicing stick control or rhythm.
I am still figuring out the best way to use sheet music where I can see it when playing ...
