Topics I've Started

Got an iPad?

Hi! I would like to start a topic regarding using an iPad for your drumming. I would love to hear how you use your iPad to enhance your drumming, such as metronome apps, sheet music, electronic books, etc.

I don't care to discuss the "mock" drum set apps (you want to tap on an iPad and pretend you're a drummer? Get real. Unless there's a hidden goodie in there, like a metronome with 16th timing that will impress me.)

I use two different metronome apps, depending on my mood & what I'm doing.

The first is Metronome Plus by Dynamic App Design. It has 16th subdivision and there's a few different sounds to choose from. It has some variation in the sounding of the subdivisions to help with timing. It is simple and easy to use.

I also use Frozen Ape's Metronome, but where there is no variation in the subdivisions I find it harder to follow. It does allow you to save your setup and I find it plays when the app is closed (so you can go to other apps but still hear the metronome.)

I don't know pricing on each and need help on how to paste app store links...

I want to try the Subdivide Metronome by Marcus Cavanaugh, inc. but there are too many complaints in the ratings about it not being loud enough.

Hello!

Hello! I am new to the forum. I haven't looked at much yet (busy practicing, lol.) I am 42 and learning to play drums. I started last year... While hanging out with my boyfriend ( he plays bass guitar ) and feeling like a 3rd wheel, he sat me down on the drumset and said "do this" and started me out on a basic 2-4 rythym. I picked it up quickly (all those years of chorus in high school finally paid off) and my new year's resolution was immediately to "take lessons"!! I have been studying for about a month and love it. I am having a second childhood. :)
I do have a dissapointment regarding drumming. I don't hear much about female drummers. My teacher (who is an awesome lady) has been playing for 35 years and remarked on this the other day. She also remarked how drumming is shifting away from the classic methods into techniques the players don't even know how to teach.
I do see some of the long time drummers stress learning the basics (technique, rudiments and such.) I am studying from the Alfred snare book In combination with my instructor's methods (she is currently working on a drumset method book.)
I am so very happy to see so many adult beginners on the forum and look forward to (trying to) keep up with it all.
I have never been in trouble for being too loud my entire life, until last week when I got in my first snare drum (a custom 14 x 7 from SJC) and got a knock on the door from the neighbor (oops.) So I will be looking for tips on how to keep the noise level down... Not to mention my hearing is very good and I don't want to damage it. I practice my drumset lessons on a Roland TD-3 set I picked up cheap. I want a real drumset, but that will have to wait until I can move somewhere where noise won't be an issue.
In the meantime - my motto is "keep hitting!"
