#351142 Bought my wife the worst present ever

Posted by Tamatrainee on 26 December 2012 - 03:16 PM

This reminds me of my brother-in-law who, when told by his wife a few years that she didn't want anything for Christmas, took her at her word and didn't buy anything for her. Needless to say, he took her away to a hotel and bought her a present on Valentines Day.
One year, he bought her a wok!
Talk about sensitive and considerate.
My Christmas present this year was having my wife present at our daughter's wedding on Saturday as she is recovering from luekaemia which was diagnosed back in May.

#350286 Best or Versed: How useful is Education in Music?

Posted by Tamatrainee on 04 December 2012 - 06:36 PM

There is substance to both arguements.
I did a OND, followed by a HND in Civil Engineering which gave a mixture (6 months of each) of College learning and office/site experience.
I think that there is room and indeed, a necessity, for both.
While I have no experience in the music field, I have learnt how to read music and play drums to a certain level. If I joined a group and played gigs, I would undoubtedly become better.
Without learning anything from books or websites, I could have tinkered at the drums and tried to figure everything out from scratch and I may have succeeded (as people did years ago without access to learning facilities) but it would have taken me much longer and I am sure that I wouldn't have reached the same standard.
Likewise, I don't assume that I could walk into any band and play like a seasoned professional as not only do I have to learn a lot more music-wise, but there are a lot of things which can only be acquired by experience (interacting with the way the individuals in a group play, improvising and contending with mistakes, etc)
I can see that the experience part would lead to more creativity although part of this would also depend on the individual's make up, the way they feel and hear music, past influences etc
To sum up - you need knowledge and experience although not necessarily in equal measures.

I read your last sentence as "you like acoustic drums but not your wife and neighbours".

That would apply to most of us!

#349641 Weak hand/arm exercises

Posted by Tamatrainee on 21 November 2012 - 03:02 PM

As stated, plenty of exercises and practice although you will never get your left as strong as your right but you don't need to. You just need to get it to an acceptable level.

#349544 Why are people like this?

Posted by Tamatrainee on 18 November 2012 - 07:17 PM

i just posted this in reply to one of her comments.

"Why are the majority of your posts demeaning to the uploader? Not very nice to these kids who are in the process of learning. Most probably don't know what wtf means, i do! Please think about what you are typing and the age of the person in the video. It's not nice, could seriously detriment their enjoyment of their chosen instrument, affect their confidence and possibly cause depression. If you don't like it MOVE ON!
This type of comment could be classed as cyber-bullying. think before typing"

I would have typed more, but i ran out of characters.

Just on this point, people in the UK (and I'm sure in the US also) have been jailed for comments they have made on the internet as this is akin to publishing such comments in a newspaper. The most recent case in the UK concerns a Lord who was falsely accused of being a paedophile and those who passed on messages naming him are facing legal action.

#348394 Best deals u ever had ?

Posted by Tamatrainee on 26 October 2012 - 12:26 PM

I have just ordered a box set of Zildjian A custom cymbals which include 14" hats, 16" crash, 18" crash and 20" ride for £650 ($1000).
Individually, these would cost £900 ($1350).

#345191 few questions about bpm

Posted by Tamatrainee on 03 September 2012 - 09:46 AM

I think the bpm is counted in the bottom part of the time signature. So if you have a 4/4 time signature, the bpm is counted in quarter notes. In a 7/8 time signature the bpm is counted in eights.
Like this I think the maximum bpm in a song would be something between 200 - 250 (but there will alway be an exception)

If it is just about counting the hits or kicks, then you could say something like 300 or 400 bpm. Because then it is literally counting all the hits. So if you're playing sixteenths in a 4/4 time signature at 120 bpm, that would be 480 bpm if you are just counting the hits.

Anyone else?

I would agree with the above and the original posting.
Normally double bass speed is measured in 16ths and 200 to 250 bpm (quarter notes) would be the limit (this is 800 to 1000 hits per minute).
Someone quoting 600 bpm is measuring actual hits per minute which is equivalent to 16ths at 150 bpm or 8ths at 300 etc.

#340008 progression log

Posted by Tamatrainee on 23 April 2012 - 09:40 PM

No disrespect intended but does your metronome go up to 430 bpm (7 beats per second) and if it does, could you play at that speed?

#339564 a quick question

Posted by Tamatrainee on 12 April 2012 - 10:46 PM

All of the above advice is relevant and the key message is start SLOW and I mean S-L-O-W.

No matter how complex a beat is, we could all play it at 1 beat per minute and possibly 5 bpm and maybe 10 bpm but there is some speed where it becomes difficult, so find that speed and practice below it for a time until you are comfortable and then increase by 1 or 2 bpm every couple of days.
You said that you had rudiments nailed. Try those with the metronome, say the single stroke roll at 60 bpm. Increase or decrease depending how you get on.
It does take practice but eventually the click becomes part of the beat.

#339325 Bad gig stories - share them

Posted by Tamatrainee on 09 April 2012 - 12:56 PM

While I have never played with a band (and am not likely to) I think that one of the worst experiences for a band, must be to put a lot of effort into practising and producing a set list, turn up at a venue and have to play to a very small number of people. Worse still, if the audience leave after a time, you don't know if it's because you are playing badly, they don't like the music or the fact that there is no atmosphere due to the small crowd.
Although, many of the big groups experienced this before they became big. I am reading Duff McKagan's autobiography at the moment and he says that in the early days, Guns 'N' Roses often played to very small crowds.
