Hi all I gave a go at filling the hole with a wooden plug but sadly my carpentry skill is lacking , so instead I kept the tom mount.
The bellow links are for images of the kit. I will post a  pic of the fully set up kit when I can get it set up.
I like this finish that much that this is now my shares kit and the old shares kit has been sold on.

It actually doesn't sound bad, the thickness of the wrap kills some of the nasty over ring you always get from cheap drums and warms the sound quite nicely ( for a crap snare! )
The rest of the kit has been covered in a maple burl style vinyl wrap.
Bass drum re wrapped and original colour tom.
