Who here has played Baba O'Riley with a band and how did you arrange it?

My band is playing thi sand we don't have a keyboard. We tried using a loop for the guitar intro where the guitar player would play one part and then hit a loop button and then play a second part on top of it. The problem we ran into was that we would completely lose time once the drums kick in (there's no way I can hear/follow that loop without a click track).
Last night we modified it so that instead of a loop, he used an echo effect that filled out the guitar sound a bit. The opening chords are then done on the bass (its normally done on the low end of a piano).
My opinion on the matter was since we can't make the intro sound awesome, lets just get the idea of it down and cut about a minute our of it and get right to the song. Awesome long intro = good. OK long intro = people leave the bar to take a smoke break before they even realize that its their favorite song.

what about playing another song by the who and running into baba o reilly and missing part of the beginning?
aside from that i think the most important part is the bass line at the start, maybe do something with that?
That was my original idea. To be honest, there's a bit of ego on the line. The guitars have pretty much said, "if we cut out the intro, then its just a 3 chord song," to which I tried to reiterate, "no one gives a **** how hard the song is to play. That's not why they listen."
Seriosuly, can you imagine if as a drummer you could tell the band not to play songs because the drum part is just 2 on the floor with the snare on 2 and 4?

Oh dear! I've just placed a couple of ads, looking for a band to play with. You've just reminded me of all the "band stuff" I might be setting myself up for!
But back on topic - I would have said just go straight into the main part of the song, because the best part is the ending !!! I was wondering how you/your band going to do the ending ? I'm interested.

Not bad. Turns out the guitar player can kind of make his guitar sound like a violin.

We do a few songs which I think are purely for egos in our band.
We play Kashmir by led Zeppelin with the full string and backing (via a very expensive keyboard), we’ve played it in about 5 venues and only 1 has really liked it to be honest. We have started being a bit more sensible on the venues we play it but the lad on keys (it’s more or less his band) never wants to drop it as he thinks not many other band could pull it off to the same level (I disagree but hey hum).
However, we also do won’t get fooled again by the who. We spent a hell of a long time on it trying to get it almost spot on, and the keyboard player’s ego came through and he has nailed the keys part spot on all the way through the song. It sounds great and the extra effort (and ego) has paid off
I say if you can get the intro going them do it, it would add a great deal to the song, but it will also require a lot of work by your guitarists to make it sound right, if you don’t get it right it could be made to sound like a ‘cheap’ version, if you know what I mean.
I really want to do the full mash-up that the who played at half time at the Superbowl a few years ago.

Good luck with the arrangement.
