first of all moderators if this is in the wrong section please move it

i want to get some recordings up on here and on youtube but dont know how to do it. i can record myself but idk how to get the song in the video other than putting my ihome right by the speakers which sounds awful. so is there a program i have to get or something like that?

im also looking into legit recording equipment. my first choice would be to get a camera that could pick up the frequencies of my drums with no mics since that would be cheapest. anything like that out there?

If you have a PC you can use the program "Windows Movie Maker." Record the drums like you would normally while playing along with the song (with headphones preferably). Get your drum file in Windows Movie Maker and find the song you're covering and match them up.

As for cheap recording equipment, there's a couple options. If you really need something cheap now, I've heard good things about an H2 recorder. I can't recall how expensive it is but it's a lot cheaper than mics and interfaces and what not.

If/when you buy good equipment (read mics), you're going to have to buy either an interface or a mixer as well (someone correct me on this if I'm wrong), so you may be better off just saving up for all that mess. Just a thought

Cheesy Goodness-
What do mean by "and find the song you're covering and match them up"?

I can get a recorded drum part into Moviemaker, but where would the video come from? I can "import" something into moviemaker but only if it's already on my PC. How would I get a video from, say, youtube onto my PC or is that not what you meant? I'm curious about recording a cover to see how I do on it. Please explain this proceedure, and thanks. Bill

record the video of you drumming with a camera

Get the video file onto your4 computer

Go into moviemaker and import it

Then get the song you were playing along to and import that into movie maker

Now you want to drag the video part and music part so when you start drumming the song's drummer starts playing.

I use the same process that basix suggested.  It does work, but it can get a little tideous when matching up the timing.  I now try to count in with my stick clicks so I have a visual cue as well as audio cue when I go to editing in the music.

Here is an example of how it turned out when I used Power Director that came with the webcam software (just like moviemanker).

Keep It Dark II

The timing was just a hair off.  And here's an example where the timing is way off in the beginning (in my opinion it was off a bit through the whole thing):

Kansas City Live

Those were examples before I started "counting in with my sticks".  I don't have an example ready to post yet of how it came out with using the visual and audio cues.  But, believe me, it helps and works great.

If anybody else has any tips for editing in the music after recording the video and making it seemless (or at least so the timing of the music matches the timing of the video taped drums), I'm all ears.

it looks like i may be leaning towards actual recording equipment. i took a quick peak at guitar center's recording section online and am quite confused. all i want is to play, record, upload to the internet with decent quality. and keep the cost as low as possible. can anyone tell me exactly what i need. hopefully all in one conveniant pack?

if i am not mistaken the movie maker only lets u edit to half second spots and some of mine are a bit off of that. so maybe a different software would help.
