Opportunity is a-Knockin’ at PIT, Hollywood, CANate Brown
I’m convinced that “opportunity” can be spelled with 3 simple letters: PIT. If you’re a drummer looking for an excellent opportunity to learn, make connections in the industry and catapult your drumming career, the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in Hollywood, CA is a giant leap in the right direction.
I recently visited the Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA. Tim Pederson, the institute’s Percussion Director and author of the best-selling book Beginning Drum – Vol. 1, was kind enough to postpone a prior engagement to give me a personal tour of the facilities.
The physical facilities surpassed my expectations — classrooms with practice pad desks, drum sets as “podiums,” a long hall of practice rooms stocked with drum sets and drummers jamming away on their studies, professional recording studios and a lighted stage on Hollywood Blvd for live concerts… everything an emerging drummer could ask for and more.
As great as the facilities are, it’s the staff that make this place rock n’ roll. Along with Pederson, I also had the chance to sit down and talk with Donny Gruendler, a PIT instructor. As we sat along Hollywood Blvd. in what they call “the alley,” I could see the passion in their eyes as they talked about what they do. Gruendler lit up as he spoke about teaching and his experience authoring the book Playing With Drum Loops. Pederson came alive when he talked about the PIT curriculum and ideas to make the program even better. The staff is stocked with an arsenal of first class professional drummers and teachers.
Perhaps the greatest advantage to PIT is their industry connections. We all know that a big part of the game is who you know. I was very impressed and enthusiastic to hear about the many great artists connected or affiliated with the Music Institute in some way. Job auditions are held at the institute and outside auditions are posted regularly at the institute. During our conversation, I really got the impression that PIT students have a huge advantage in the industry. It’s almost like “opportunity” is staring them in the face.
I recommend PIT to any drummer that’s passionate about a career in drumming. PIT can offer you the skills, guidance and connections that you need to make it in the industry. However, PIT is not like a giant, magic button that once pressed, success is found. The incredible staff do their part, but it takes your hard work, talent and dedication to meet them half way.
