Accenting the Middle Note in Compound MeterSteve Ley
In compound meters*, the middle-note in each set of three notes is often neglected—overshadowed by the outer notes. In this beat, the middle note is featured, echoing the dotted-quarter-note pulse.
Check out the suggested sticking pattern for the groove below. Notice that the outer-notes in each set are played with the right hand, like when playing a shuffle groove, and the left hand plays the middle-note. I suggest getting comfortable with the pattern before adding the accents.
I first heard this rhythmic concept used in Chick Corea’s tune, Space (see video below). The feel and rhythmic variations that Gary Novak plays are mind blowing!
