"Atavachron" is the title track from Allan Holdsworth's classic fusion album, released in 1986. It was his first album which featured the SynthAxe — a guitar-like MIDI controller.
The above groove is based on the improvised, flowing linear-groove that Gary Husband plays in the A sections of the tune.
Right hand: plays loose hi-hat and floor tom.
Left hand: plays the snare strongly on the back beats as well as filling the negative space with quiet ghost notes.
In the middle of the second measure, notice how the right hand travels from the hi-hat to the floor tom on the off-beat sixteenth notes (the “e’s” and “a’s”). This is the most distinctive part of the groove and a fun concept to play with.
