Funk Rock Fusion – Drum Beat

This fusion drum beat conceals the one with multiple layers including the open hi-hat, bass drum and slick rim knock pattern.
We’re used to hearing a clear indication of beat 1 in music. This groove tests the convention by resting the bass drum on beat 1 in both measures, coming in on the “e” to bring the unexpected. There’s no clear “1” standing out. The open hi-hat adds a layer of rhythm to the already complex beat. If you’re having difficulty playing the open hi-hat, it’s still a great groove without it. Give it a try!
You’ll also notice a paradiddle beginning on the “&” of beat 2 in the second measure. It might feel strange at first because the paradiddle pattern is starting on the off-beat (& ah 3 e & ah 4 e). For most of the paradiddle, the bass drum is playing in sync with the right stick. Beat 4 has no bass drum.
The tempo indication for this groove is 130bpm, but it sounds great at slower (or faster) speeds. Experiment with tempo, changing surfaces and whatever else you can come up with to make this groove your own. If you come up with something cool please share it in the comments below.
