Playing with the Ride – Drum Beat

Combining a touch of funky ride and a solid rock bass, this beat is a great fusion of styles with a unique sound.
The ride pattern uses some “ostinato 3” patterns with an additional layer being played on the ride bell. The snare and bass make up the “rock” portion of the fusion, although one could argue that the syncopated bass strokes on the e’s have a funky flavor.
Probably the most difficult part of this groove is the ride pattern. In today’s pop music, the ride patterns (or hi-hat patterns) don’t often vary as much. So, it may be an under-practiced focus area that a lot of drummers overlook.
