Pompeii – Bastille – Pre-ChorusSteve Ley
This rhythm is featured in the pre-chorus sections of Bastille's 2013 hit, Pompeii.
Bastille drummer, Chris Wood, plays an accented snare part over a ‘four-on-the-floor’ bass drum. A 5-stroke roll is used to round-off the beat.
The accent pattern is a recognizable Son Clave rhythm, which serves as a temporal key in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazillian music. In the mid-1950s, Bo Diddley, popularized the rhythm by featuring it in his self-titled debut single. Is one of the most widely used rhythms throughout the world today.
‘Bo Diddley rhythm’ over ‘four-on-the-floor’ bass drum.
