Poor Tom – Led ZeppelinSteve Ley
"Poor Tom" was recorded in 1970, yet was not included on the Led Zeppelin III album. It was finally released 12 years later on the Coda album, two years after John Bonham's death.
The instantly recognisable two-measure groove is heard throughout the three minute track. The first measure features a syncopated bass drum figure. The second measure resolves the tension with a straight-ahead ‘train beat’.
The snare part (voice 1, up-stems) is played quietly except for the accented back-beats in the second measure. The bass drum (voice 2, down-stems) is played strongly throughout.
- To get started, try playing each element (snare, bass and hi-hat w/foot) individually with counting.
- Try two elements together in different combinations before attempting all three elements together.
- Try playing the accented snare notes as rim shots to bring out the back-beats.
- Add a hint of swing to the eighth notes, particularly in the first measure.
