‘R L F’ Pattern Between the Toms and BassSteve Ley
This two-measure pattern is based on a three-note motif; played with the right stick, then the left stick, then the foot (RLF). To make the phrase groove in 4/4, the snare is played on the back-beats. The pattern is rhythmically interesting underneath, yet easy for fellow band members and listeners to follow.
Note: as groups of three do not neatly fit into 4/4, there is a variation or ’rounding’ at the end of each bar. Also, notice that the first back-beat is played with the left hand, then the subsequent back-beats are played with the right.
Below, the pattern has been written for snare and bass only. I recommend starting with this version before attempting it with the toms.
