Interlude Beat From “Welcome to the Jungle”Steve Ley
"Welcome to the Jungle" was the second single from Guns n' Roses acclaimed debut album, Appetite for Destruction (1987).
The above ‘jungle groove’, adorned with overdubbed percussion, is heard during the interlude section of the song (3:20). The bass drum keeps the beat, playing ‘four-on-the-floor’, while the syncopated rhythm is played with accents on the floor tom.
For patterns that involve playing a constant stream of notes, it is easy to limit yourself by always leading with your dominant hand. To increase your dexterity, try the following exercise which is designed to make you more comfortable leading with either hand.
Play the notes (below) with alternating sticking. Note that the triplets at the end of the bar breaks up the duple-pattern and switches the leading hand for the repeat. Start slowly and carefully. It will be a rewarding challenge.
