Jungle Groove – Like Suicide – Soundgarden
Description
Tribal-esque grooves are a great way to add a mysterious layer of anticipation to a song. In this lesson, learn how this technique was used in Like Suicide by Soundgarden and some techniques for creating your own tribal-sounding grooves.
Matt Cameron builds anticipation throughout the beginning of the song by using a snares-off tom groove. The notation below is the main groove used, although he uses some low-tom variation to keep it interesting throughout.
It’s easy to convert any of the grooves you play into a tribal-esque tom groove. Simply move your right stick (or left stick if you play left handed) to the low tom and turn the snares off. If you want some higher-end in the groove, add in some hi-hat foot quarter notes like Cameron did to fill-out the groove.
