Time-Tested Power Fill - Paradise City

By Nate Brown

Steven Adler plays this beastly drum fill leading into the double-time outro of Paradise City. Though it sounds impressively confusing, it's based on a simple pattern of repeating 'right, left, kick.' The left foot is playing eighth notes throughout the entire fill. You might think that playing eighth notes against sixteenth-note triplets would be difficult to do, but in this fill, every right stick stroke lines up with the hi-hat foot. In other words, the right stick and left foot play the same part.

The last bar of the fill has the feet "walking" back and forth, starting with the left foot. Use the hi-hat eighth notes to gauge your timing when transitioning from the sixteenth-note triplets in the previous bar. Lastly, remember to start slowly with this fill, playing it over and over (and over) until you build muscle memory. It'll take some time and effort, but eventually you'll be playing it just like Adler.
