The Pad - Exercise 5

By Nate Brown

Tip: Practice these at different volumes. Sometimes we get stuck in the rut of playing all our pad exercises at the same volume. Yes, we might be playing dynamically by adding accents, but can we also play the exercises softly? It's surprising how changing the volume can make the exercise more difficult. Break out of the rut! On another note -- many drummers struggle with the problem of death-gripping the drum sticks. By playing softer, it forces the grip to relax and loosen. It's a great technique for developing proper stick-gripping technique.
