Ambidextrous drummer, Ilan Rubin, plays open-handed style — generally using his left stick to play time on the hi-hat. This allows him unrestricted access to play the snare and toms with this right stick. Rubin plays large sized drums — a 26″ bass drum, 24″ ride cymbal, a 14″ mounted tom plus two floor toms setup in a (right handed) conventional configuration. For the drum solo, Ilan plays variations on a rhythmic theme in the first bar of every two and essentially embellishes and fills in every other bar. As the solo develops, the rhythms played on the crash cymbals change from mainly playing the pulse to accentuating the hit points. Rhythmic density increases. Tuplets and recurring three-beat phrases build the tension toward the climax of the solo.
